Socio- Religious causes:-
abolition of practices like sati, female infanticide, support to widow remarriage and female education were seen by many as an interference in their culture by the outsider.
Discontent among sepoys:-
As per Laxmi Subramanian pay, pension and prospect were the main reason for discontent.

The following reasons for failure of the revolt of 1857-1858 are :-
I) The lack of unity, planning and efficient leadership on the Indian side.
II) The organisational and military superiority of the English side who was led by very able and experienced generals.
III) Racial-discrimination was believed to be a major reason for the revolt of 1857-1858
