Answer:

Liberty is not the opposite of equality, nor are they the same thing, and the goal of a society should not be to somehow balance the two or limit either.

Take the extreme, yet all too common, example of a society where one person has Liberty and every one else are subjects to that person. Such a monarchy or dictatorship has liberty for one and oppression for all else.

Many cynics would use that as an example of why absolute Liberty is not an absolute good while ignoring the critical observation that such a society often achieves a very uniform level of “equality” for everyone else.

People in free societies would not judge the relative equality of all those subjugated to be a virtue or laudable achievement. So how do you measure the virtue of equality?

To be good for people living in a society, equality must have a purpose other than imposing relative equality to one another. Equality without Liberty is meaningless at best. The measure of Liberty in a society is the means by which you judge the virtue of your efforts towards equality.

Equality under the law and equality of opportunity are means by which you achieve Liberty for more people in society. Liberty for all is the goal. Equality and democracy are means towards that goal.
