The force of attraction between any two unit masses separated by unit distance is called universal gravitational constant denoted by G(capital g). The relation between G and g is not proportional. That means they are independent entities.

F = G*M*m/d2......2
By 1 and 2
ma = G*M*m/d2
On upward or downward motion under the influence of gravity a=g
So,
mg = G*M*m/d2
Cancelling m from both sides
g= G*M/r2
g=GM/r^2
