Discuss the role of hybridisation on crop improvement
Answers
any singal variety of plant species may not possess all the useful characters. Most of these can be brought together into one variety by hybridisation. Hybridisation is done by crossing two or more varieties having the desired genes. The hybrids thus produced are then selected, crossbred repeatdly to obtain a variety of maximum yield and utility.
wHEn the sturdier plant is crossbred with the better yielding variety or is hybridised, a new daughter plant is produced which combines the qualities of both parents
Hybridisation refers to crossing between genetically dissimilar plants. It may be inter varietal, interspecific and intergeneric.
Two crops of good characters (desired character) are selected and crossed to obtain a new crop having desired characters of parental crops.
This method of hybridisation improves crops with respect to yield, disease resistance, pest resistance etc.
