Hydrochloric Acid - It is the acid present in our stomach which helps in digestion of proteins. The walls of stomach is protected by the layer of mucus. Hydrochloric acid plays a vital role in activating the deactivated form of Pepsin into its activated form i.e. pepsinogen. Pepsinogen is the enzyme which helps in digestion of proteins.

The hydrochloric acid in the gastric juice breaks down the food and the digestive enzymes split up the proteins. The acidic gastric juice also kills bacteria. The mucus covers the stomach wall with a protective coating..
