Answer:

Mahatma Gandhi began promoting the spinning of khadi for rural self-employment and self-reliance (instead of mill manufactured) in the 1920s, thus making khadi an integral part and an icon of the Swadeshi movement.Mahatma Gandhi collected large sums of money to create grass-root level khadi institutions to encourage spinning and weaving which were certified by AISA. This was called the 'khaddar' or 'Khadi' movement.

Explanation:

Gandhiji played an important role in encouraging people for using hand spun and woven clothes. He himself let go off the clothes made by British and decided to wear clothes made of khadi in order to promote swadeshi movement. He encouraged people to boycott foreign material and use swadeshi goods on order to promote non cooperation movement.
