Primary group refers to that group of people whom a child engages with for the first time in his/her life. For example- Family members like mother, father, siblings, grandparents etc.
The role of primary group in personality development or building is very important because of the following factors:-
- Primary group is the first set of people whom a child comes in contact with. Thus, these people play a very important role in his/her life.
- In the early stage of life, a child learns about his/her surroundings from the primary group of people. Thus, they help to shape their mind and understanding of the world around.
- A child socializes with the primary group at the first stage of his/her life, thus the process of socialization begins at home with the primary group.
- A child's moral character is shaped and guided by his/her family members. They are responsible to look after his/her moral and social well-being and also their development as a individual.
- Primary group teaches the individual about certain values and culture by providing a favorable atmosphere of learning.
