- Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar were very important social reformer of the nineteenth century. They worked hard to improve the conditions of women in the society. At that time there were many social evils in the society like sati, child marriage, purdah, female infanticide , caste systrm , untouchability etc. Raja Ram Mohan roy and Ishwar chandra Vidyasagar tried to bring changes in the society.Raja Ram Mohan Roy. believed that if the Indian society wont be educated it will be impossible to remove social evils from the society.
- He founded the Brahmo Samaj in 1828 to reform the society. He along with the help of Lord William Bentinck abolished the Sati system in India in 1829.
- Ishwar chandra vidyasagar wanted to change the Orthodox Hindu society.He encouraged the widow remarriage. The life of the widow were very miserable. She had to led a life if a saint.Even girls who became widow at a young age were not allowed to get remarried.
