Raja Rammohun Roy fought vigorously for the upliftment of women. He supported women's education and widow remarriage. He opposed child marriage and polygamy. He also campaigned against 'sati'. It was largely due to his efforts that this inhuman practice was abolished by Lord William Bentinck in 1829.

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar launched a cruisade for the betterment of the widows. He also wanted that widows should be allowed to remarry, if they so wishes. His efforts led to the passing of the Widow Remarriage Act of 1856, which permitted widow remarriage. He was also devoted to the cause of education of women. He helped John Eliott Drinkwater Bethune set up a school for girls in Calcutta in 1849. He, himself, opened a large number of schools for girls and ran many of them with his own funds.
