Following is the role played by Shivaji in establishing and strengthening the Maratha Empire:

1. Shivaji was the man who shaped out a mighty empire in the Konkan area.

2. His leadership organized the Marathas.  

3. He won his first success in the age of Sixteen when he captured the fort of Kondan, Raigarh and Toran.  

4. He used the technique of Guerrilla warfare and through his military ability, he even dealt with Mughals.

5. The increasing influence of Shivaji frightened the king of Bijapur, who sent a troop under the leader-ship of Afzal Khan defeat the Marathas. But the situation got changed when Shivaji entered the war, he killed the Afzal Khan and beat the army of Bijapur.
