• The Ulema started an orthodox movement in the subcontinent to teach the real essence of Islam on the basis of Quran & Hadis.
• However unlike the Sufis, the Ulemas did not accept the liberal movement or the practices of the Sufis. The Ulemas had a strong presence in the South inclduing Tamil Nadu & Kerala
• After the 1940s, the Tablighi Jamaat (Society for Outreach) became a group that worked mainly among the ulema (religious leaders), highlighting personal renewal, priesthood, missionaries and orthodoxy. Alternatelt, the legitimacy of the mass religion, as well as exaltation of the pirs and the memories of the Prophet, was upheld by other ulemas. The establishment of Aligarh Muslim University with a wider, more progressive curriculum than other major Muslim universities was a result of the fast secularizing movement led by Syed Ahmad Khan.
