The role of the opposition in democracy is as follows :-

1. In a democracy, it is the responsibility of the opposition party to check the functioning of the Government.

2. The main duty of the opposition party is to criticise the policies of the government.

3. During the question hour, the opposition parties criticize the government generally.

Thus the opposition parties try to restrain the Government from abusing its power.

Role outside the Legislature :

The opposition parties attract the attention of the press and report their criticism of the government policy in the newspaper.

Thus the role played by the opposition party outside the legislature prevents the government abusing and misusing the power.
