Discuss the role of UNESCO in promoting library and information activities in India

India is no exception. Libraries were established in ancient India mainly by the patronage extended by emperors, major capitalists, and scholars. Indian emperors and kings were supported scholars and scholarship. There is evidence of well-developed libraries even in the sixth century A.D.

 The famous Nalanda University in Bihar had its own magnificent library with a massive collection of manuscripts covering the universe of knowledge. The first was established in Delhi in India, the second in Medellin, Colombia, and the third in Enugu, Nigeria. The plan for the Delhi pilot public library had been to establish a ‘typical public library on Western lines’. When it was founded in 1950, the Delhi Public Library’s purposes ‘were to provide the people of Delhi with a public library service using modern techniques.


All India Library Conference in Nagpur in January 1949, not long after Indian independence had been achieved, echoed many of the public library ideas also articulated by UNESCO and linked the future success of India and all its citizens to the effective spread of libraries across the nation.

UNESCO is one of the greatest organisations in the world who are working towards the developments and education in many countries.Education and training are most important asset for a person.In many countries literacy rate is very low.This, UNESCO was established.
Earlier the Liberarian job was not given much importance and people used to opt for better options but now after the proper training and advancement in the liberarian job.Now people are opting for this training too.
Information and technology is already quite on a high pace.Thus, after the UNESCO's entry in this field people's interests had increased.UNESCO is providing job opportunities too.
