Bengal was the most populated area in India....In 1905, July 20, Lord Curzon announced the division of Bengal into 2 provinces..
' Bengal ' which included the western districts of Bengal proper, bihar and odisha and CALCUTTA was made its capital.
' Eastern Bengal and Assam' which had the eastern districts of Bengal proper and assam. DAC CA was made its capital.
THE SCHEME OF PARTITION WAS IMPLEMENTED ON OCT 16, 1905
PEOPLE STARTED THE ANTI PARTITION MOVEMENT AGAINST THE PARTITION MOVEMENT.
1) on October 16 the national leaders declared it a day of mourning and was observed as a day of fasting.
2) the streets of Kolkata had crie s of Vande Mataram which became the theme song of nationalism
3) Muslims and Hindus tied rakhi to each other
4) Rabindranath Tagore composed 'Am ar Sona Bangla'.

RISE OF ASSERTIVE NATIONALISM WAS THE CAUSE OF SURAT SPLIT.
Surat split 1907:
1. the assertive nationalist wanted to expand the ideas of boy cott and swa deshi to all parts of India but it was not agreed by the early nationalists.
2.early nationalists didn't want to extend an open support to boy cott which was in conflict with their policy of petition and persuasion.
3.there was a disagreement over the candidate of the next president. Dadabhai Naoroji who was respected by both the wings was made president in 1906.
4.in 1907, the assertive nationalists proposed the name Lala Lajpat Rai as president of the surat session but the early nationalists wanted Rashbehari Ghosh.
5.when the session started there was utter confusion and conflict leading to the expellition of assertive nationalists.
THE METHODS USED BY ASSERTIVE NATIONALISTS
1. SWAD ESHI- means producing necessary items in ones own country and buying foreign goods
2.B OYCOTT- it was similar to swadeshi. it included the burn ing of foreign goods
3.NATIONAL EDUCATION - the national leaders advocated national universities were free of government control.
4.the assertive nationalists believed in adopting the policy of non viole nce resistance and vigor ous political action .
THEIR ACHEIVEMENTS :
1. These leaders were able to inculcatte national pride by reviving the ganesha festival and shivaji festival
2. self reliance or swadeshi promoted setting up of swadeshi stores like Iron and steel industry by Jamshedji Tata
3.they declared what India needed was complete freedom.
