In series circuit the charge through each capacitor is the same let this be Q.
Consider two capacitors of capacitance C1 & C2 let the potential through the capacitor be V1 & V2.
Then
V1=Q/C1
V2=Q/C2
V=Q/Ceq
V=V1+V2
Q/Ceq=Q/C1+Q/C2
⇒1/Ceq=1/C1+1/C2
for n capacitors in series
1/Ceq=1/C1+1/C2+........1/Cn

Series combination of capacitor formula
The formula for calculating the series total capacitance is the same form as for calculating parallel resistances: When capacitors are connected in parallel, the total capacitance is the sum of the individual capacitors' capacitances.
