'Rape of the Lock' is a mock-epic written by the Neo-classical age English poet called Alexander Pope.  Neo-classical writers favoured poetry which was original and gave lot of importance to classical literary traditions like epic, heroic couplets etc

Setting of the text:

The poem is a satire on the hypocrisy of the English society of the age and the vanity of the high society. It is based on the real life incident that had taken place when a young suitor Lord Petre cut a lock of hair from Arabella Fermor. This trivial incident had become a public outburst between the two royal families and Pope found it perfect to satirize the incident in his mock-epic. The ‘epic’ is set in the dressing rooms and drawing rooms of London and Hampton Court.
