STRUCTURE:-

mitochondria are small-sized (0.5um -1um) ,rod-shaped , spherical and filamentous organelle found in cytoplasm of cell. Mitochondria are bound by a double membrane .Outer membrane is smooth and permeable whereas inner membrane is selectively permeable and numerous folds.

FUCTIONS:-

  1. Mitochondria are the sites of aerobic respiration called kerb's cycle. The food is oxidised by the use of molecular oxygen and energy in the form of ATP .The cell uses this stored energy for various vital activities.
  2. They provide intermediates for the synthesis of various biochemicals like steroids ,fatty acids , chlorophyll and amino acids.

Answer:

The structure of the mitochondrion is adapted to the function it performs: Outer membrane – the outer membrane contains transport proteins that enable the shuttling of pyruvate from the cytosol. Inner membrane – contains the electron transport chain and ATP synthase (used for oxidative phosphorylation)
