Xanthine oxidoreductase is a complex homodimeric 300 kDa cytosolic enzyme. Each subunit contains a molybdopterin cofactor, FAD, and two nonidentical iron–sulfur centers. It is widely distributed, and exists in two interconvertible forms in mammals: xanthine dehydrogenase and xanthine oxidase.
