Answer:

France under the Ancien Régime (before the French Revolution) divided society into three estates: the First Estate (clergy); the Second Estate (nobility); and the Third Estate (commoners). The king was considered part of no estate.

France before the Revolution was an absolute monarchy, ruled by the royal family who claimed to have the divine right to do so. Their powers were unquestionable by the ordinary people, for fear of invoking God’s wrath.

In this respect the priests who had considerable influence on the ordinary people, helped the royalty. Then there was the aristocracy around the kings, who helped the royalty by collecting taxes and maintaining army to fight wars.

Lastly there was the ordinary masses of people which included the intelligentsia, academicians, lawyers, businessmen, farmers and various artisans. They were collectively called the Third Estate (Tiers États).

Therefore the French society was divided into 3 levels, the aristocracy, the clergy and the ordinary people. The first two categories enjoyed all the privileges including huge land grants, titles and most important the exemption from paying any taxes, which was borne exclusively by the people from the Third Estate.
