Apparently Somerset Maugham's story "Salvatore" is a plain narration of the biography of Salvatore in chronic order. A young man of fifteen falls in love, is betrayed, gets married to another and lives a life of hardwork and hardship with a wife and two boys. It might seem that Salvatore has no basic theme, however, the writer adopts the theme of love and affection.
He shows that love and affection is not merely falling in love at a young age. It is more about how one leads his life with the hardships he suffers and finds joy in it. Love and affection is when despite all the troubles one is happy in life.
Salvatore is living a quiet and peaceful life with his family. He works all day long to earn for the family. Yet, at the end of the day he never complains about it.
The beauty of how life carries on is the true meaning of love and affection.
