Plate Tectonics is a scientific theory explaining the movement of seven large plates, under the earth’s mantle (lithosphere) against several smaller plates.
In general, Plate tectonics cause earthquakes and formation or disappearance of land mass.
Continental drift and the formation of the current continents is attributed to the theory of Plate Tectonics.
250 million years ago, there was a large single continent called the Pangea. 50 million years later, the Pangea broke up into two giant pieces called Gondwana and Laurasia. Over the course of several million years, they broke up further and drifted away to form the current continents and oceans.
