Discuss the three states of matter in detail with proper diagram--solid,liquid,gas on the basis of molecular model. ii) What do you understand by the term density? Write an experiment to find the density of an irregular solid with diagram.
Answers
Explanation:
Answer i
Solid
Matter which has a definite shape, size and volume is called solid.
Liquid
Matter which has a definite volume but no definite shape is called a liquid.
Gas
Matter which neither has a definite volume (unless contained in a closed gas jar) nor a definite shape is called a gas.
Answer ii
Density
Mass per unit volume is called density.
Experiment
Things required: a graduated glass cylinder, a light thin string, water, a weight scale
Precedure:
a) Measure the mass of the solid using the weight scale, let its mass be 50g.
b) Fill the glass cylinder water to a certain depth, say
20ml.
c) Tie the irregular solid with the thin string and gently dip it into the water.
Observation:
The level of water rises to a certain height, say till 30ml.
Conclusion:
Knowing the initial level and the final level of water after dipping the solid, and the mass of the solid, the density of the solid can be figured out in the following way--
Rise in level of water = volume of solid = 30ml-20ml= 10ml
Therefore volume of solid = 10cm³ (as 1ml of water = 1cm³)
Mass = 50g
Density = mass/volume
= 50/10
= 5g/cm³ (Example)
