In the absence of a tin opener they took recourse to various techniques and strained their every nerve to open the lid. Harris fished out a pocket-knife and made an abortive attempt to uncork the lid but the knife broke injuring him badly. George attempted to open the top with a pair of scissors, but to his misfortune the scissors slipped off inflicting a minor wound. The author didn’t lag behind and try to open the cap, but he was skidded off into two feet of muddy water.
Yet ther didn’t relent. Failure redoubled their yield. Harris held a big sharp stone steadily against the top of the tin held by George and the author battered it with the mast, but all the strenuous efforts met with sheer frustration.
Being disgusted and infuriated they almost flattened the tin with repeated hits and knocks."
