Answer:

The poet has tried to show the difference in the views of people belonging to the old generation (her mother) and those belonging to the new generation (poet’s). The old people have emotions, memories, beliefs, etc attached to the ecology.

For the poet, the Red Champak Trees have no use. Their pollens pollute the air and thus the city. They cannot be prevented from entering the houses and the human body.

The pollens are the cause of severe pain that his mother is suffering. As the poet has no emotions attached to the ecology or the trees, he decides to cut them.

On the other hand, his mother’s perspective is on contrary to his views. For her, the tree is not just a tree but a good omen for her and her house. It is the flowers of the Red Champak Trees which she and other people offer to the Gods and to their daughters.

This is what makes her consider her suffering a small sacrifice which she is giving to the tree. Read a detailed analysis of AK Ramanujan’s works

The poem Ecology by AK Ramunujam  is filled with symbolism and imagery. to express & communicate to the readers his emotions in realistic and better manner. With the sue of imagery, Ramanujam creates marvellous pictures  to make his poem real and vivid in the readers imagination.

Explanation:

  • The poet has used imagery in most stanzas, imagery which invokes sense & sight. These imagery are trees, rain, home, flowering & passing birds.
  • The poet has  used "organic imagery" in the 3rd stanza that pertains to "personal experience" of a "character's body" such as thirst, pain, hunger, and so on. That is, the poet has used organic imagery by through the "mother's pain" which is caused by the champak tree's flowering thus making the readers too feel the same pain.
  • In the 9th stanza the poet has used "olfactory imagery" which invokes "sense of smell". That is the poet uses the word fragrance wherein the readers are made to smell the champak flower's "strong fragrance" that is spread all over and is not possible to resist. The 6th stanza, the poet uses "auditory image" which invokes "sense of hearing". That is, the readers can listen to the "nightly visiting voices" & "bone creaking"
  • The poet also made use of many symbols such as "flowering tress" that symbolises the "concept of mothering". The flowering of a tree is like a birth of a child that gives immense pain to the mother yet she does not allow the tree to be cut down as she loves it so much and as if it was part " of her own self" like "that of the child"
  • The act of "offering flowers to the God" symbolises the significance of the tree. This symbolises the fact that her worship to God would be meaningless and incomplete without trees,as  it is the tree that gives her the flower which she offers to the Gods. Above all the the "mother" itself is a symbol in"herself". She symbolises the life long sacrifices towards her family as well as towards nature
