Answer:

Modem is generally used when one wants to access internet service provided by the Internet Service Provider (ISP) through their telephone line or cable connection.

Information transmitted over telephone line or cable connection is typically in continuously varying electrical form (aka analog form). But the information that is transmitted by any of the electronic devices (including computer) is in a binary form (aka digital form). Then, how can digital computers communicate across analog lines? To accomplish this task, it requires use of modem.

Modem is a device that turns digital information into analog signals for the telephone or cable journey (which is known as modulation) and then turns the analog signals back into digital information at the other end (which is known as demodulation).

Modem contain two different kind of translators. There is a modulator and demodulator - that's why it is called modem (MOdulator - DEModulator).

Thus, the modem connects to ISP which typically provides either cable or DSL internet service. Cable modems have a coaxial connection, which is the same type of connector found on a TV or cable box. This connects to a cable port on the wall. DSL modems have a telephone connector, also called an RJ-11 jack, which connects to a telephone socket on the wall
