Answer:

Merits of the Coalition or the Alliance Government:-

  • SITUATIONAL: The Alliance Government is suitable for the requirements of the situation and time. It is particularly essential in the changing situations and political environment to sustain the political stability in a gigantic state like India
  • NON- AUTOCRATIC GOVERNMENT:- There is always a fear factor that a government can become autocratic under a single party government as it commands absolute majority. On many occasions such a government doesn't hesitate to indulge in anti- people activities because of its absolute majority in the legislature. But such fear is to be found less in an Alliance Government. Because any such decisions are taken only after full deliberation with all the constituent political parties of the Alliance. As a result the misuse of power and fear of becoming autocratic in nature is quite less in an Alliance Government.

Despite of merits mentioned above there are demerits also. Demerits are as follows:

  • WEAK GOVERNMENT: Alliance Government is generally found to be weak. Such government can't take bold decisions to surge ahead in any aspect as the interests of the member parties have to be given due consideration to keep them well satisfied.
  • EXPENSIVE: Alliance Government is generally found to be a costly affair. In order to satisfy all the constituent political parties in the Alliance Government a great number of aspirants have to be accommodated in the ministry and unnecessary the size of the ministry becomes over-sized which results in the great loss of public money
