Society has a natural tendency of transforming itself through popular movements, especially when certain sections of people are affected by the prevailing social order.
In India, the caste system has been a bane for centuries. In the 20th century, the country witnessed many movements which were influenced by the overriding factors of exploitation and discrimination of the lower castes by the upper strata of the social order. The scheduled castes and scheduled tribes fought for their rights in the fields of education and jobs, most so as they wanted an equitable distribution of the country's wealth.
Similarly, the women in our society have been exploited and shut out from the privileges that men have enjoyed as a matter of routine. Women's movements for their emancipation has been a periodic feature in our country.
In recent times, corruption has been a very big issue across the country, especially in public offices and most so with the involvement of politicians and public servants. This matter has reached such a low level that popular movements had to be started to bring the matter to people's notice.
Other social issues that have triggered mass movements at the local or regional level have been issues related to displacement of people for industrialisation, scarcity of food and potable water, distresses of the farming community etc.
