SHORT VOWEL:
A short vowel word is any word that does not allow the vowel within it to generate that vowel's long vowel sound. For instance, the word bug is a short vowel word, because there is no long U sound.
For example, the letter 'U' in the word 'bug' makes an 'uh' sound. Words can include a combination of more than one long vowel sound, like with the word 'betray'; more than one short vowel sound, like with the word 'sinking'; or a combination of long andshort vowel sounds, like the word 'confide.'
LONG VOWEL:
A long vowel is a vowel that is pronounced the same as the name of the letter. For example, the "U" is pronounced like "you," not like "a" which would be the sound of a short vowel. Sometimes a long vowel is combined with another vowel.
