There are several ways in which marriage has changed in modern India, this are some of the ways:
1. Change in the objective of marriage: The main objective of marriage was Dharma in the ancient times, it was about religion. Right it is mainly about procreation.
2. There is change in rules of exogamy and endogamy: Legislation has banned rules of Varna, Gotra, Pravara exogamy and caste and sub-caste endogamy. Also cross-cousin marriage are increasing
3. Change in the process of spouse selection: It was the prerogative of the guardians or parents to choose the bride or bridegroom. In contemporary India there is liberalism which has led to individuals choosing their own mates.
4. Legal age of marriage: In the old days child marriage was common in modern India the parliament raised the age of marriage 18 years for girls while 21 years for boys.
5. Dowry system: Kanya Dana was the practice that was prevalent in the past but in these modern days the Government is trying eradicate the practice due to suicide by girls, humiliation of the father who cannot pay dowry among other reasons.

Changes in family:
1. Joint family  no longer continues: Families were large in size
2. Status of women was very low: In modern India equality is on the forefront and women are respected in the family
3. Members of a family had no individual identity: In contemporary India families tend to have an individual identity for status.
4. Change in decision making: In the past the eldest male in the family used to make the decisions but in modern India the decision is made with both parent and sometimes the entire family due to liberalism
