Last week, when I met my grandmother, I put up some questions for her which I've been too curious to know.
The questions are enlisted below:
1). How did they make them cool in hot summer and cold winters?
》 In the 21st Century, the science have been much developed. We have air conditioners that makes us cool and escape the hot summers and we have the electric-heaters which makes us warm in the cool winters.
But at 19th century (at my grandmother's time) there were no Ac's developed. Now, the question arises, how the people lived in so hot weather without it?
My grandmother told me that the people back then,
used to take frequent baths, that keep them cool.
Secondly, they spend more time in shades. As there were much more trees as compared to now.
Moreover, they made their house ceilings high that prevented the humidity.
As they dont had the habit of Ac's, everything was normal for them. On the other hand, in winters they didnt have the electric-heaters so they generally used warm clothes and sweaters to keep them warm and a lot of physical exercise which maintained their body temperature as well as make them fit and healthy too
2). Means of transport and communication of time?
》 Back in 1900's, India wasn't as developed as the foreign countries. They have fewer means of transport, such as for long distances there were, Railways and river transport(by ships/boats).
However for travelling short distances, bullocks, cycles, rickshaws were used.
Thats why, the environment was much less polluted beacuse no diesel and petrol were used.
3). Food items of her time ?
》 Back in 1900's foreingn food wasnt welcomed. Means there were no pizza's, burgers, cocktails, and other fast-foods.
Traditional Indian food was much appreciated by the Indian people.
There was also a trend of Ayurvedic food materials.
However,it doesn't mean that the 90s kids didn't have any candies .
Candies like , Chatmola, poppins, poppets, rasna, mango-bites were very famous. And the coldrinks were packed in small cylindrical packets.
4) Source of entertainment at her time ?
》The concept of cinemas was already introduced in 1900's; but the display was not colourful. It was black and white. Moreover there were very few channels available in television. One of them, which was very popular was 'Doordarshan'.
Moreover, the kids in 20th century, didn't have video games or pc's to play with. Handmade toys were widely selled.
The the kids back then usually played outdoor games than indoor games, especially the street games like skipping, playing with tiers, kabbadi, cricket, Paandi, kho-kho, etc.
This made the children fit and healthy as compare to the new generation kids who are always interested in indoor activities.
I realised that although the technology has made our life much more comfortable than the old generation but we can never experience the sweet memories the 1900's kids have with them; because they have lived a free life without the 'Materialistic Society' we have today.
