Answer:

1. To introduce the attendee to the qualities of a detective which produce quality investigations.

2. To introduce the attendee to what makes a “professional investigation.”

3. To motivate the attendee to always produce the best work product by showing the importance and benefits of thorough, complete and objective work product.

4. To encourage the attendee to make a self-assessment and evaluate if they are really doing all that they are capable of to better serve themselves, the public, their profession and their agency.

The class begins by introducing the attendees to the different types / assignments and responsibilities of different detectives. The class then focuses on the differences and similarities of the detective’s responsibilities as compared to the responsibilities of a patrol officer.

The class then moves into the eight qualities of a great detective or “the total package detective.” The qualities which will be discussed at length are:

1. The ability to talk to people.

2. “Next level” job knowledge.

3. Observation skills.

4. Report writing skills.

5. Attention to detail.

6. Ability to “think outside the box.”

7. Courtroom testimony skills.

8. Positive attitude and tenacity.
