Discussion on changes in size and factor of primary sector in national income

Here is ur answer!!
I am guessing that you mean the economic impact of agriculture as an industry. I am not sure of the impact areas you are looking for, but I think that "Opportunity Lost" is definitely a keyword that comes to mind. India has one of the highest area under cultivation for lentils, but among the lowest productivity per hectare. New pundits would like us to believe that GM food will change that. But that's simply not true.
So here is the impact :
1. The percentage of workforce is not reducing as rapidly as the percentage share in GDP. This means that lesser money is being shared by more people. Result: Further disparity of income.
2. Area under cash crops as a percentage of total area (aka the shrinking of the food crop area): While it does not yet impact our food security, my sense is that unless some drastic economic and social change is deliberately initiated, our food and nutrition will be threatened soon. Already, some crops like garlic and bananas are overwhelmingly imported from China - and they are so stuffed with growth hormones that the banana literally tears its skin apart while growing. I don't get Indian bananas in my entire town!
3. Vertical Integration, Cold Storage and Irrigation: After 70 years, we still don't have a national cold storage network that allows farmers to optimise their sales and gain maximum profit. Our irrigation is still largely monsoon dependant. IF the contribution of the primary sector has to be optimal (50% of workforce contributing to 13% of GDP is not optimal), then we have to find ways to increase per capita monetisation. This is vital not just for economic growth, but for our basic food security.
Hope it helps!!
