It was said so because,

eduacating a man will benefit only him because after studying he goes for work. But eduacating a women is totally different because in most of the houses women stay in home even after studying. She is the one who remains with her children in all their ups and downs. She is the one who eduacates and teaches good morals for her children.So if a women is taught definitely her family would also be benefitted.
