Both have a larval stage that is quite different morphologically than the adults. The larval stage of the frog is aquatic, but the caterpillars are terrestrial. Both larvae usually feed on vegetable matter. Both undergo metamorphosis. Frogs do not metamorphose within a cocoon, but out in the open. Butterflies metamorphose within a cocoon. The entire body of the caterpillar turns into a sort of organic soup, and the butterfly body is formed from this mass of organic matter. Tadpoles however, change gradually over several months while continuing to feed and move about. Frogs live relatively long lives as adults, usually at least a few years and they can live decades in captivity. Butterflies live shorter lives, sometimes as short as a few days.
