The light splits into seven colours when it passes through a prism. The splitting of light into seven colours is called dispersion. The band of seven colours obtained of dispersion is known as spectrum. Thus, a rainbow is formed due to dispersion of sunlight from water droplets which behave as small prism and sky behaves as a screen.
