Explanation:

light has different particles with frequencies if it enters a glass prism I the particles of the lowest frequency bend the most and the particles don't bend that much therefore we can see 7 colours caused due to 7 different frequencies

The splitting of white light into its component colours on passing through a dispersing medium that is the glass prism is called Dispersion of light.

Experimental study of dispersion of white light through a glass prism:

  • Take a thick sheet of cardboard and make a narrow slit S in its middle.
  • Allow sunlight to fall on the narrow cleat a narrow beam of white light passes through the slit.
  • Now, take a glass prism ABC and set it so that the white light beam falls on one of the refracting faces (say AB) of the prism.
  • place a white cream facing the other refracting face ( AC ) of the prism as shown in the adjoining figure.
  • turn the prism slowly so that light coming out from its face AC appears on the screen.

We find a beautiful band of seven colours on the screen the colours at the two ends of the colour band are violet (V) and red(R) respectively. The sequence of colours scene is violet (V), Indigo (I), Blue (B), green (G), Yellow (Y), orange(O) and red (R) .The acronym VIBGYOR helps to remember the sequence of colours.
