Given info : equation of a wave moving in a positive direction is given by, y = 1/(1 + x²) at t = 0 and by y = 1/[1 + (x - 1)²] at t = 2sec where x and y are in metre.

To find : the velocity of the wave in m/s is...

solution : if a wave [y = 1/[1 + x²] starts to move with velocity v , after time t, equation of wave is given by,

1/[1 + (x - vt)²]

so at t = 2, y = 1/[1 + (x - 2v)]² ....(1)

given at t = 2, y = 1/[1 + (x - 1)²] ...(2)

on comparing eq (1) and (2) we get,

x - 2v = x - 1

⇒v = 1/2 m/s

Therefore velocity of the wave is 1/2 m/s.
