In a disproportionation reaction , the reactant undergoes oxidation as well as reduction simultaneously. For example,

Chlorine gas reacting with NaOH,

3 Cl2 + 6 OH− → 5 Cl− + ClO3− + 3 H2O

.

Here Cl2 is having oxidation state =0,

It is reduced to Cl- i.e with oxidation state =-1. And simultaneously Cl2 is oxidised to ClO3-, in which Cl has oxidation no. =+5.

Hope you get it!
