Answer: Chandigarh
Explanation:
Dispute over the city of Chandigarh is between Punjab and Haryana.
In September 1966, the Government led by Indira Gandhi accepted the demand of the Akali Dal leaders for the formation of "Punjabi Suba" soon after the merger of East Punjab States Union and Patiala with Punjab.
Very soon on 7th September 1966 Punjab Reorganisation Act was cleared by the Parliament. The Act got implemented from 1st November 1966. According to this act Punjab was trifurcated by creating Haryana, Punjab and shifting certain regions to Himachal Pradesh.
South of Punjab which predominantly spoke Haryanvi dialect of Hindi formed Haryana, while those who spoke the Pahari dialects were merged with the Union Territory, Himachal Pradesh .The remaining part which did not include Chandigarh, formed the Punjabi state, which held on its name.
Until 1966, Punjab was considered as a Hindu majority state till 1966. Soon during the linguistic partition, the districts having Hindu dominance were separated from the state.
Chandigarh replaced Lahore which was the capital of Punjab before the parition. Punjab as well as Haryana both claimed their right over Chandigarh. It was later declared as a separate Union Territory and played the role of capital for both the states.
Hope this helps.
