If I understand your question, external discipline or better said, external consequences to our actions can limit us in many ways. As an example, an external consequence to a decision to become an artist or entrepreneur is lack of steady, guaranteed income. That’s a huge force that keeps us from making our dreams a reality.
The fear of failure can cause us to limit our work to safe goals and lower our expectations and scope to the point that we create mediocre things that are acceptable but not exceptional.
It is wise to build a life around what you want to do, not build a life and try to figure out how to pay for everything you’ve included in your life. To minimize the influence of external forces, one must minimize the need for external rewards such as a large salary.
I could write chapters on this subject but for brevity I’ll summarize that external discipline and consequences can lock a genius into the position of a day laborer for life. It’s important to realize that life is full of compromises and one of the ones I’ve made and I see myriad people make is security over authentically creating the life you truly want.
