Laws of flotation:

1. The body floats on the liquid if it has less density of that of the liquid.

2. The body is fully submerged and attains equilibrium if the body has equal density of the liquid.

3. The center of gravity of the liquid displaced and the body  should be vertical.

Activity:

  • A plastic bottle is filled with water
  • A piece of clay is attached to the pen cap made up of plastic
  • The cap is placed on the bottle and allowed to float
  • The lid is covered
  • The pressure inside the bottle is increased by squeezed
  • Addition of water to the cap increases the density and sinks the cap.

Principle of Floatation - Statement

The principle of floatation states that when an object floats on a liquid the buoyant force that acts on the object is equal to the weight of the object. Following are the pointers to remember in floatation:

The displaced volume of fluid is equal to the volume of the object which is immersed in the fluid.

If the weight of the object is greater than the upthrust, then the object will sink in the fluid.

If the weight of the object is equal to the upthrust, then the object is balanced making the object float.
