Masulipatnam is situated on the Bay of Bengal on the river Krishna. It derived its name owning to the construction of a gateway to the town decorated with eyes of fish (also called machali). It was founded in the 14th century by the trading Arabs who found their way from Red Sea to Southern India. It is an important centre of trade as well as crafts like fabrics, jewellery etc. The fort at Masulipatnam was built by the Dutch and the port has a medium size fishing harbour which always bustled with activity.
