The formula to use is:

d² = t² - (r1 - r2)² where

d = the distance between two centres of the circle

t = he distance of the tangent

r1 and r2 = the radii of the circles

Apply the formula and find t:

d² = t² - (r1 - r2)²

13²  = t²  - ( 9 - 4)²

169 = t²  - 25

t²  = 144

t = √144

t = 12

Answer: The length of the tangent is 12 cm
