Step-by-step explanation:

Given Distance of chord AB from the centre of a circle is 8 cm.Length of the chord AB is 12 cm . find the diameter of circle

  • Let the centre of the circle be m
  • So AB = 12 cm and OM = 8 cm
  • So MC is perpendicular to AB
  • So the chord bisects the perpendicular drawn from the centre of the circle to the chord.
  • So AC = 6 cm
  • So in triangle MCA,
  •              MA^2 = MC^2 + AC^2
  •                         = 8^2 + 6^2
  •                            = 64 + 36
  •                            = 100
  •          Or MA = 10 cm
  • So we have diameter d = 2 x r
  •                                     = 2 x 10
  •                                     = 20 cm
