If two individual forces are of equal magnitude and opposite direction, then the forces are said to be balanced. An object is said to be acted upon by an unbalanced force only when there is an individual force that is not being balanced by a force of equal magnitude and in the opposite direction.

If a set of forces acting on a body produce no acceleration in it, then forces are said to be balanced.

e.g. When we try to push a heavy box and it does not move, the force applied by us is balanced by the friction force acting on the box by the ground.

Unbalanced forces

If a set of forces acting on a body produces some non zero acceleration, forces are said to be unbalanced.

e.g. When we drag a box on the floor, there is an unbalanced force acting on the box.
