The presentation discusses with different types of canals and thus intimate in delivering a canal or ridge canal contour.

The loss of water depends on the difference between the dug navigable canals and closely determines the contour lines of the land with avoid costly engineering.

It is discussed with contour line and follows based on water surface level.

Answer:

A canal is an artificial channel constructed to convey water from reservoirs, rivers, etc. for several purposes such as power navigation, generation, irrigation, etc.

Canals are classified into different types based on factors such as  alignment of the canal, type of boundary surface, nature of supply source, functions, financial output and discharge capacity .

Contour canal and ridge canal are the types of canal based on the alignment of canal.

(1). Contour canal:

  • A canal is called contour canal, when it is aligned roughly parallel to the contours of the area.
  • This kind of canal can be seen in hilly regions. The ground on one side of the canal is higher, since it is parallel to the contour line. Hence the irrigation can be done only on the other side of the canal.
  • A contour canal has to pass the drainage also. Therefore, the cross drainage works are needed to be provided.

(2). Ridge canal:

  • When a canal aligned along the ridgeline or watershed line of the area is called ridge canal or watershed canal.
  • Since ridge canal is running at the peak altitude of the area. Therefore, the irrigation on both sides of the canal up can be possibly done to a larger extent of the area.
  • Because, there is no interception of natural drains on ridge lines. Hence, no cross drainage works are needed for this kind of canal.
