Explanation:
Distinguish between:-
a) Inspiration and Expiration
Inspiration is the intake of the air into the lungs. Expiration is the expulsion of the air out of the lungs. Inspiration is an active process. Expiration is a passive process.
b) Aerobic and Anaerobic respiration
The breakdown of glucose in the presence of oxygen to produce more amount of energy is called as aerobic respiration. The breakdown of glucose in the absence of oxygen to produce energy is called as anaerobic respiration.
c) Respiration and Combustion
The difference between respiration and combustion is quite apparent when you realize that “chemically,” it is the same thing. However, certain processes and enzymes in our body that regulate this process of releasing energy so that our food does not spontaneously undergo combustion like fuel in rockets or automobiles.
d) Photosynthesis and Respiration
Photosynthesis converts carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and glucose. Glucose is used as food by the plant and oxygen is a by-product. Cellular respiration converts oxygen and glucose into water and carbon dioxide. Water and carbon dioxide are by- products and ATP is energy that is transformed from the process.
Answer:
a) Inspiration and Expiration
Inspiration is the process of inhalation or intake of the air. It is by inspiration that oxygen enters the body. ... Expiration is the process exhalation or breathing out the air. It is by expiration that carbon-dioxide is expelled out of the body.
b) Aerobic and Anaerobic respiration
Aerobic respiration is a fixed metabolic reaction that takes place in the presence of oxygen, going on in a cell to transform chemical energy into ATPs. Anaerobic respiration is a process of cellular respiration in which the excessive energy electron acceptor is neither oxygen nor pyruvate derivatives.
c) Respiration and Combustion
Respiration
- It produces a large amount of energy stored as chemical energy.
- If temperature is allowed to rise, the cell may damage.
Combustion
- It produces energy waste as heat.
- The temperature during combustion can be very high and usually higher than respiration.
d) Photosynthesis and Respiration
Photosynthesis
- It is an anabolic process.
- It is an endothermic reaction as it requires energy.
- Carbon dioxide is the raw material used for photosynthesis.
Respiration
- It is a catabolic process.
- It is an exothermic reaction as it liberates energy.
- Glucose and Oxygen are the raw materials used for respiration.
