Explanation:

The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 provides for the establishment of Protected Areas in India. There are different categories of protected areas which are managed with different objectives for the larger motive of conservation.

Chapter IV of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 deals with protected areas in India. Under the law, there are four types of protected areas which can be established:

National Park (For example: Ranthambhore National Park)

Hitched to the habitat for particular wild animal species.

No biotic interference, except for buffer zone

Boundaries clearly defined and circumscribed by legislation. No alteration shall be made except by a resolution passed by legislature.

Wildlife Sanctuary (For example: Asola Wildlife Sanctuary)

Boundary may not be clearly defined or fenced

Limited biotic interference permitted subject to restrictions.

Conservation Reserve (For example: Asan Conservation Reserve)

Uninhabited and completely owned by the Government of India but used for subsistence by communities.

Community Reserve (For example: Keshopur Chhamb Community Reserve)
