Alluvial soil is mostly confined to the Great Northern plains and the coastal plains and support many crops like rice and wheat. Black soil is found mostly in the northwestern part of the peninsular plateau mainly in Maharashtra and parts of Gujarat and cotton grows best in this soil.

  • Alluvial soil is made up of silt, sand & clay. It's deposited by three important Himalayan rivers system [the Indus, the Ganga & the Brahmaputra].
  • The soil is prevalent in the river valleys of the Northern plains (Indus, Gnaga, Brahmaputra), strips in Gujarat and Rajasthan, as well as in the Eastern coastal plains in the deltas of rivers of the peninsular plateau (Mahanadi, Krishna, Kaveri).
  • According to their age, alluvial soils can be classified as old alluvial (Bangar) & new alluvial (Khadar).
  • In this soil, rich in nutrients like potash, phosphoric acid & lime which is suitable for growing paddy, wheat, sugarcane & other cereal and pulses crops.
  • Alluvial soils are more common in the piedmont plains that are at the foothills such as Duars, chos & Terai. It's more alkaline in drier areas & need fertilizers and help in good irrigation.

  • Black soil known as reguar soil or black cotton soil. It covers 16% of India total geographical area.
  • It's found in the Daccan trap (Basalt) areas & is made up of lawa flows.
  • It covers the plateau areas of Saurashtra, Maharashtra, Malwa, M.P & also lies along the valleys of the Godavari and Krishna rivers.
  • It's made up of extremely fine like as clayey material & suitable for growing cotton.
  • In this soil,rich in nutrients found like calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, potash & lime, but is poor in phosphoric content.
