Ammonia is a chemical compound with the formula NH3, and as such, is a neutral substance (no electrical charge). Ammonium is the name of a positively-charged ion with the formula NH4+1. Ammonia contains one nitrogen atom and three hydrogen atoms, and the minus one charges of the individual hydride ions balances out the plus one charge of the nitrogen. The ammonium ion has one more hydrogen than the molecule of ammonia, and therefore has a plus one charge. They are two very distinct and different chemical substances.
